My science-fiction/adventure screenplay in development, Tatala, has been named a quarter-finalist in the Manchester Film Festival . MFF officials inform me this places the script in the top third of the many submissions to this BAFTA-qualifying film event. The 2026 edition of the Manchester Film Festival spans March 19 through March 29. Katie on set     Sad news arrived recently. Katie Chingyeh Lee  took leave of this world far too early on June 2.  For many of us in Taiwan’s international film scene, Katie stands forever tied in memory to our first professional experiences in cinema. She cast us in, and advised us through, projects like Ang Lee’s Life of Pi and Martin Scorsese’s Silence . She worked with arts educators to arrange experiences that would help all interested to bring new creations into being. The thoughts of many in Taiwan are with the family now.  Farewell to a fun, serene, inquisitive, and inspirational presence. Taiwan’s lovers of imaginative film who have been eagerly anticipating the next edition of the Sub-Tropical Independent Film Festival need wait only a few days more. The third festival is nearly here: 2025 May 10 Saturday . National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) provides the venue. Once again, planners Barry Hall and Li-Ting Huang have arranged the short films into three programs, with this year’s screenings scheduled at 14:00, 16:00, and 18:50. As the acronym might imply, STIFF doesn’t mind a few long shadows and a bit of pungency in its off-road explorations of cinematic power. The short comedy is an official selection of the Venice Film Week, an annual event showcasing independent films with an edge. Congratulations to Chung Hua Weng (翁重華), musical voice of ‘Melodia: a short film in rondo form.’ ‘Melodia’ is an official selection of the 13th Buenos Aires International Film Festival starting next week. Professor Weng’s performance in the soundtrack has been awarded top honours by the festival jury. Over 120 countries are represented in BUEIFF events. Festival planners describe cinema as ‘a magic tool that speaks a universal language, which allows the ability to unite people from all over the world in an instant. Art, in all its forms, crosses any border, culture, society, ethnicity, or religion. Art is what most identifies us as human beings and what gives us humanity.’ Professor Weng recorded the music for ‘Melodia’ at Platinum Studio Taipei (白金錄音室). We’re delighted to announce that Melodia: a short film in rondo form is an official selection of the 38th Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival. The Taiwan film will be screened on November 8 Wednesday 13:30 at the Gateway Cinema as part of a full program entitled East .  FLIFF, slated to run from November 3rd through 12th, screens over 200 films in Fort Lauderdale, Saint Augustine and the Bahamas. Venues include the storied Gateway Cinema, the historic Savor Cinema, and the Cinema Paradiso on Hollywood Beach. Hard Rock Live hosts Opening Night. Melodia , filmed entirely in Taiwan, stars Yi-An Chen with Aaron Don Don, Dora Lo, Anna Tian, Manav Mehta, Hank Yu, and Jia Lin Chen. Laticia Fan is director of photography. Chung Hua Weng performs music by Ludwig van Beethoven. The film was written and directed by A T Beaune.
